The word “sheriff” sparks a vivid image in the minds of most Americans. A beige uniform, a shotgun and a vast, rural territory in which geography and culture make law enforcement very different than it is in bustling cities. The word comes from late Old English, when it was used to describe royal authorities in various shires.
