Sauk Prairie Optimists hear about homelessness

On January 17th, Angela Witzcak, Communications Director of Pathway Home of Sauk County Wisconsin, formerly known as the Baraboo Area Homeless Shelter, spoke to the Sauk Prairie Optimist Club. While the homeless center has been in operation for five years, they changed their name to Pathway last year to better reflect their mission of breaking the cycle of homelessness. Pathway is the only homeless center in Sauk County and has a waiting list of 100 people; there are 256 school-aged children in Sauk County who are homeless. Residents can only stay in the shelter for 89 days, by the licensure of the center. A case manager meets weekly with residents to establish goals to bring the resident out of homeless status. The number one reason people are homeless is the lack of affordable housing; less than 10 percent of residents are there due to drug/alcohol issues and 80 percent are age 65 or older. Pathway is participating in a national fundraising event--Coldest Night of the Year--on February 24, 2024. Information is available at cnoy.com. The Sauk Prairie Optimists meet at the 6:8 Inc. dining room on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at 7 a.m. Visitors are always welcome.
