The Early Mazomanie Lumber Yard of Hazeltine & Sutcliffe By Frank Wolf   Erwin Hazeltine and Robert Sutcliffe had a Mazomanie lumber yard for eight years starting in 1886. They were also partners in building construction for 13 years. The Mazomanie Sickle of April 28, 1888 said they extended their lumber business starting a branch near Moscow. Their lumber yard was located north of the railroad tracks. Erwin Merton Hazeltine (1850-1901) was born in Black Earth WI, the son of Vermont born farmers Orien B. Hazeltine and Dorcas Pierce. He first married Susan Elizabeth Davies (1851-1887) on January 28, 1874 in Mazomanie. Erwin later married her sister, Martha Helen Davies (1861-1938) on July 1, 1889, after Susan had passed away. They were the daughters of English born, early Mazomanie lumber dealer and fanning mill factory owner Nathaniel Davies and German born Anna Furth. Erwin and Susan are living in Mazomanie at the 1880 US Census, where Erwin is listed as a carpenter.  The 1900 US Census finds Erwin and Martha still in Mazomanie as a carpenter. Ervin was also a stock farmer and served as a village trustee and assessor. Erwin and his two wives passed away in Mazomanie and are interred in the Mazomanie Cemetery. Erwin had six children with Susan and three children with Martha. Robert William Sutcliffe (1849-1924) was born in Arena WI, the son of Arena Township farmers Charles Sutcliffe and Sarah Blakey. He was raised on the farm and married Amelia Priscilla Cairns (1853-1915) in Mazomanie on December 15, 1875. Amelia, born in Middleton WI, was the daughter of New York born Middleton and Madison Township farmers John Cairns and Sarah Leavit. The married couple is found living in Mazomanie at the 1880 US Census. Robert is a carpenter. They moved to Arena Township farming in 1896. The 1900 US Census reports the move. They remained farming until their retirement to Mazomanie in 1916. Both passed away in Mazomanie and are buried in the Mazomanie Cemetery. They had seven children.
