A Quiet Place: Day One Review
One of the newest horror franchises returns, in a return to ‘A Quiet Place’. This time, we take a step back to see where it all began. But does the prequel live up to expectations set from the two breakout predecessors?
‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ follows a woman in New York City on the day that a mysterious alien invasion arrives on their doorstep. A small group of survivors and herself must learn to navigate the new dangers on every corner, as even the slightest sound could mean disaster.
I enjoyed my time with ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’. It was a fun prequel to a series that I already find very entertaining, in ‘A Quiet Place’ Part 1 and Part 2. Is it the most incredible film I’ve ever seen? No, it isn’t. But it’s still a good, fun time with a great cast.
Starring Lupita Nyong’o as Samira, the woman who we follow through the invasion’s beginning. Nyong’o is great in this film. She carries a lot of this movie, and makes a somewhat interesting role into one that really keeps you engaged throughout the movie. Her most prominent co-star here is found in Joseph Quinn as Eric, a young man also caught in the chaos of the invasion. Their relationship and dynamic throughout the movie really made a lot of this movie work for myself, and brought a humanity that I think would’ve been lost with lesser actors.
‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ does disappoint in some regards, when it comes to plotting and serving as a prequel for the other two installments. There is a lot of intrigue into looking at how chaotic and fascinating the start of an alien invasion in this world could look, and that doesn’t feel like something this film was entirely interested in telling. And the story it did tell wasn’t quite compelling enough to keep me from wishing they had gone into more detail or depth on what it might look like for the first day of an alien invasion.
Visually, I thought the film did a great job at capturing a new environment for this franchise. Setting the movie in New York City, a place they point out is always known for being loud, for a series following monsters attracted by sound, is a great concept. It worked well, and did a great job at making it feel distinct enough from the other two films in the series.
Overall, if you are a fan of ‘A Quiet Place’, this film is another good installment in the franchise. Even if you aren’t a fan of those films, I think ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ has enough to offer as an enjoyable thriller in its own right to warrant some intrigue.
