Home ›Sauk County Board Chair removes Supervisor’s public addresses from website “because [he] felt it was important,” Statute says addresses are not “privileged”
A webpage that once listed mailing addresses and hometowns for Sauk County Board Supervisors has been changed.
The link, which is posted as the Board’s committee database, now lists “505 Broadway RM 144” in Baraboo as the address for each supervisor. This is actually the West Square Building, where supervisors gather for Board and committee meetings. The link where supervisor contact info is listed, along with emails and phone numbers, is at saukdomino.co.sauk.wi.us/Internet/Applications/main.nsf/publicDistrictList.xsp.
It’s not clear when this change was made, but the Reedsburg Independent noticed it on Monday, September 16th, when it wanted to include each supervisor’s hometown in coverage about the Sauk County Health Care Center vote. The newspaper has traditionally included the community where supervisors live, as well as what districts they represent.
The Indy emailed the Sauk County Clerk, inquiring as to when and why the information was changed. On Tuesday morning, we received a reply indicating the decision was made by Board Chair Tim McCumber.
Since this information is public record, the Indy requested it, and the Count promptly obliged.
The Indy then contacted McCumber via email for answers as to the change. He didn’t say when the alteration was made, only that other counties, such as Dane, Adams, and Juneau, also don’t put this information online, and thus he “didn’t think the request was unusual.” When the Indy asked if someone had made the request and why it was decided, all McCumber wrote back was, “I requested the change because I felt it was important.”
On Tuesday of this week, the Indy checked the official County page for Juneau, and it did list the home addresses of board supervisors. Dane and Adams, however, did not, as McCumber indicated.
Other municipalities do post this information on their websites. The City of Baraboo, for example, lists the home addresses of its Common Council members. Two of those members, Bryant Hazard and Andrea Lombard, are also Sauk County Board supervisors. The Spring Green Village Board, Richland County Board of Supervisors and Reedsburg Common Council also list home addresses on their websites.
McCumber added constituents can get in touch with supervisors by email or phone if they so choose. He said supervisors also have mailboxes at the West Square Building.
According to Wisconsin’s Public Records Law, the home addresses of elected officials is not privileged if said officials are required to live in the district they represent. The law does not require posting this information online, but it also can’t be withheld if requested.
Sauk County Board supervisors are required to live within the district they represent.
