Next week heralds the beginning of the spring Friends of the Reedsburg Public Library Book Sale on Thursday, May 15, which runs through Sunday, May 18. On Wednesday, May 14, the Local History and Genealogy group embarks on their first summer field trip of 2025.

The Local History and Genealogy Meet Up has existed since September of 2024. The group meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m. for a program on a genealogy or local history topic.

Past topics have included resources for genealogy at Reedsburg Public Library, the Family Search database, how to find property on plat books, and the resources of the Wisconsin Historical Society and the Wisconsin Veterans Museum. New members are always welcome.

On May 14, the group will meet at the Research Center of the Sauk County Historical Society (900 Second Ave., Baraboo) promptly at 1 p.m. Executive Director Paul Wolter of SCHS will give the group a tour of the research facility which houses court records, family histories, historic maps, rare books, plat books and thousands of photographs documenting the history of Sauk County and its communities. It should be noted that the Research Center is distinct from the Van Orden Mansion where many of the Society’s artifacts are displayed. Come join us to get a behind the scenes look at a treasure trove of Sauk County history! Over the summer the group will visit the Loganville Museum, the Old Franklin Historical Society in Plain, and the Circus World Museum Archives in Baraboo.

From May 15 to May 18, the Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale is scheduled to coincide with Reedsburg’s City Wide Garage Sale. Stop in during library open hours to browse hundreds of used library books and donations. Several children’s books from early readers to middle grade chapter books will be on offer. This is a great opportunity to stock up on books for your children’s home collections and to prepare for this summer’s library reading program! Individual items are not priced, but donations to the Friends group are appreciated. Proceeds from the May book sale will go toward an updated document scanner for the public. Help is still needed in manning and setting up the sale; contact the library if you are interested!

The summer library reading program for youth and adults is just around the corner. This summer’s theme is Color Our World. Youth services staff have started visiting area schools to promote the program and distribute informational flyers. Reading challenges begin on Monday, June 2, and programming begins on the week of June 9.
