Barn Quilt Signs at Spring Green Library

Lori Schaefer, artist and graphic designer is showing her colorful barn quilt signs at the Spring Green Library Community Room Gallery in June. Lori Schaefer has always been fascinated with the colorful barn quilt that decorate the rural Wisconsin landscape. When she retired a few years ago from Organic Valley, she was motivated to make a barn quilt for the pole building on her property and taught herself how to create them. When she finished that project she was hooked! She then started learning more about the patterns, their meanings, and the history of barn quilts. This has led Lori to recreate some of her favorite folk art patterns, design her own creations, and to teach classes. The exhibit includes a collection of colorful barn quilts of classic quilt designs, as well as her original designs. Also included is an original interpretation of a “Freedom Quilt” featuring an assemblage of quilt patterns used to help fugitive slaves navigate their escape along the Underground Railroad. Part of the exhibit is a group of barn quilts from the class Lori taught at Maplewood Village Assisted Living which was funded by an Artistic Development grant by River Valley ARTS. Lori’s exhibit can be viewed during regular library hours when the Community Room is not in use. Please ask for the key at the circulation desk.
