Sauk Prairie Optimists hear about “functional fitness”

Sandy Drury, Wellness Supervisor at Sauk Prairie Healthcare, spoke to the Sauk Prairie Optimist Club on Wednesday, November 15. She spoke of the need to maintain cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, and balance for “functional fitness” throughout life. The human body starts to lose strength at age 30, bone density at age 40, and cardiovascular conditioning at age 50. Studies have also shown that 25% of people 45 years of age or older have had one or more falls. Physical activity can prevent disability and is the Number One factor in preventing Alzheimer’s Disease. Even something so simple as sitting on the edge of a chair and standing up and sitting down for ten repetitions each day can contribute to Functional Fitness. Ideally, everyone should try to do 30 minutes of activities that increase cardiovascular strength 5 days a week – this can be anything from walking, gardening, exercise classes, or even housecleaning! Wellspring, Sauk Prairie Healthcare’s fitness center, is one of many places that offer equipment, guidance, and fitness classes. Unlike some other centers, Wellspring is fully staffed all hours it is open, all staff have exercise science degrees and Certifications, and month-to-month memberships are available. Drury says anyone is welcome to tour Wellspring and assured the group that they will not be subjected to any hard sales pitches. George Culver Library adds nature-themed collection

The George Culver Community Library in Sauk City is thrilled to announce that it has added $2000 in conservation-themed books to its collection thanks to a generous grant from the Rooted in Conservation fund through the Community Foundation of South Central Wisconsin. Materials, only a small portion of which are shown below, range from board and picture books for children, to wilderness essays and Wisconsin field guides for adults. Books were selected with input from several area experts in the field, and are available to anyone with a library card through the South Central Library System. “These books are such a wonderful gift for our community, says library director Lisa Renier Thomas. “Whether you’re a backyard birder or someone more experienced in the field, you’ll find something to enjoy.” Anyone stopping in to view the collection in January may enter to win one of four books to take home and keep. A drawing will be held at noon on Friday, January 27 and the winner announced on the library’s Facebook page. Pictured is a small sampling of the library’s new Rooted in Conservation collection.
