Sauk City woman dies in Highway 12 crash

A Sauk City woman died in an automobile crash on Tuesday, October 4, at the intersection of Highway 12 and State Highway 188. Chelsea Kovacich, 33, died when a car trying to turn towards Madison on Highway 12 from 188 struck her vehicle. She was pronounced dead at Sauk Prairie Hospital.

New Sauk Prairie police building is on a “Microgrid”

Earlier this year, the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin’s Office of Energy Innovation launched the Critical Infrastructure Microgrid and Community Resilience Centers pilot grant program for local utilities to study the benefits of pursuing a microgrid in their community. Four member utilities of WPPI Energy participated in the study.

The state’s top election official has admitted that an “unfortunate mistake” by the Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) caused an error on the upcoming fall ballots, depriving Independent candidate Douglas Alexander of his legal right to have a summary of his platform printed beneath his name, as required by law. 

Black Earth Elementary sold, antique store slated to move in

The Wisconsin Heights School District has “an approved offer to purchase [the Black Earth Elementary property] from William Baney,” according to District Administrator Jordan Sinz. “[Baney] intends to keep the building and renovate the space.  His intended purpose at this time is to provide retail space for crafts and antiques.”

Remembering Dr. Carlson


Dr. Haakon Carlson was the third physician partner at Prairie Clinic. He also helped to establish clinics in Black Earth and Lodi, was the first medical director for Sauk Prairie Ambulance, and founded the Good Neighbor Clinic in his retirement. The Good Neighbor Clinic was established in the 1990s as a primary care clinic to serve individuals without health insurance.

Heights and Sauk Prairie receive funds from Evers’ investment

In anticipation of the start of the 2022 school year, Gov. Tony Evers today announced a $90 million investment in K-12 education using available American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. $75 million of this is supplemental funding designed to provide nearly $100 in per-pupil aid.

Dane County Sheriff’s gun buyback yields 577 weapons for $43,000

On Saturday, August 13, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of the City of Madison Police, held their first Gift Cards for Guns event at the Alliant Energy Center. During the four-hour event, a total of 577 weapons were surrendered in exchange for $43,380 in gift cards for gas and groceries. 

Local quilters competing in 2022 Great Wisconsin Quit Show

Quilters from across the country submitted their best work for judging in this year’s Great Wisconsin Quilt Show. Two area quilters and their quilts have been selected to compete in the 2022 Great Wisconsin Quilt Show Quilt Contest. Their quilts will be displayed for more than 20,000 visitors to the annual event in Madison this September.

Baldwin visits Middleton, jobs coming to Baraboo


Tom Crabb, General Manager Space Operations at Sierra Space in Middleton, explains the different parts of a rocket engine to Sen. Tammy Baldwin last week. Baldwin toured the Middleton facility on Aug. 12 after helping secure a $20.2 million dollar contract for the company, which co-invested in the project with the Air Force Research Laboratory. The money will be used for research and development of the of the Advanced Upper Stage Rocket Engine (VR35K-A) and testing facilities. The work will be conducted in Baraboo with completion expected in 2024 and will bring about 100 jobs to the area. The technology will replace outdated rocket motors developed in the mid 1900s.
