Rough week for Eagles’ baseball team

It was a rough week for Sauk Prairie’s baseball team, which dropped all three contests it played.

DeForest toppled the Eagles, 7-5, on April 11. Beaver Dam bested Sauk Prairie, 7-2, on April 13, and Lodi cruised past the Eagles, 13-0, on April 14.

Here’s a recap of Sauk Prairie’s week:

Sauk Prairie’s boys golf team had an extremely busy week and showed once again they could be one of the area’s surprise teams.

Here’s a recap of the Eagles’ week:

Stoughton Invite

The Eagles shot a 354 and finished in sixth place at the 10-team invite on April 10.

BATTLE TESTED

If back-to-back state tournament appearances have taught the Sauk Prairie girls soccer team anything, it is that persistence pays.

The Eagles also recognize that their season is a work in progress, a point they made while competing in three matches spanning five days last week.

Schlimgen's stepping down

Sauk Prairie girls volleyball coach Amy Schlimgen resigned last week so she could have more time to see her daughter, Alia, play college volleyball. In four years with the Eagles, Amy Schlimgen led the Eagles to two state tournaments, including a second place finish at state in 2002. For more on Schlimgen’s resignation, see sports on page 11. For five months, Amy Schlimgen went back and forth, contemplating her next move.

The decision process was agonizing, excruciating.

In the end, though, family always comes first. So Schlimgen resigned as Sauk Prairie’s girls volleyball coach last week.

The Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld track teams competed at the Marshall Quadrangular on Monday.

No team scores were kept, but here were the Vanguards’ top finishes:

• 400-meter dash — Senior Sam King was third and freshman Travis Dreikosen was sixth.

Off and running

Makayla Westphal and Wisconsin Heights’ girls softball team are off to a 1-3-1 start. The Vanguards lost to Iowa-Grant, 16-6, tied Pecatonica, 2-2, in a rain-shortened game and lost to 2022 Division 5 state runner-up Barneveld, 14-2, in their first three games. Heights then played two games on Saturday, falling 4-1 to Cuba City, and then beating Potosi/Cassville, 7-6, in 10 innings. Heights has three seniors, two juniors, one sophomore and 11 freshmen on its roster. “Our first couple games were against two really veteran and seasoned teams that were a little rough for the girls,” Heights manager Scott Wood said. “Pitching from Makayla Westphal had been solid, but defense is where we need to clean it up. We’ve gotten better already in last 3 weeks as we figure out positions and lineup, so with five games this week we’ll see how we grow.” Photo by Aaron Jacobus

Eagles’ softball team rallies for win

Sauk Prairie’s girls softball team rallied for a 3-2, 9-inning win over visiting Wisconsin Dells on Monday. Jenna Johnson’s double in the ninth plated Riley Kerl with the game-winning run as the Eagles improved to 1-1.

Starting strong

Sauk Prairie boys golf coach Shane Frey went back and forth for three days.

Play? Cancel? Play? Cancel?

Frey knew the weather was going to be suspect for the season-opening Sauk Prairie Invite on April 4. But Frey rolled the dice, moved up the start time, then had it pay off when all 18 teams were able to finish their rounds.

Heights baseball has high hopes

Few know the ins and outs of Wisconsin Heights baseball like Ted Severson.

Severson, a 1988 Heights graduate, played for the Vanguards growing up. He later played Home Talent League for Black Earth and Mazomanie.

And now, he’s the Vanguards’ manager.
